kBTU To kWh Calculator: Convert kBTU To kWh (+ Chart)

When it comes to heating or cooling capacities, you will sometimes need to convert kBTU to kWh (kilo British Thermal Units to kilowatt-hours). To help you out, we created an online kBTU to kWh calculator (insert kBTU, get kWh) along with a handy conversion chart (0.01-1000 kBTU to 0.00293-293.071 kWh, respectively).

Let’s start with the calculator you can freely use, followed by the formula and the conversion chart:

This is how the calculator works:

Say you want to convert 30 kBTU to kWh. You just insert ’30’ in the kBTU input field, hit ‘Calculate’, and you get the result in this form:

converting kbtu to kwh with an online calculator

You can see right away that 30 kBTU is equal to 8.792 kWh. By the way, in you need this conversion in reverse – kWh to kBTU – you can check a similar kWh to kBTU calculator here.

Let’s have a look at the relationship between these two units:

kBTU To kWh Formula

Both of these units are used in HVAC to denote the heating or cooling capacity of air conditioners, furnaces, and so on. Here is how they are defined:

  • kBTU stands for kilo British Thermal Units. 1 kBTU is simply 1,000 BTUs.
  • kWh stands for kilowatt-hours. In HVAC, these do not measure electricity usage but the heating/cooling capacity of HVAC appliances. Namely, 1 kWh is equal to about 293 BTU.

Here is the exact relationship we can use to write a formula that can convert any kBTU to kWh:

1 kBTU = 0.29307107017 kWh

Basically, 1 kBTU is equal to 0.29307107017 kWh (practically, we say about 0.3 kWh or that we can use 3 kWh per kBTU conversion). Here is the exact kBTU to kWh formula:

kWh = kBTU × 0.29307107017

So, if we want to calculate kWh from kBTU, we need to multiply kBTU by a factor of 0.29307107017.

Quick Example: How many kWh is 14.5 kBTU? We simply insert 14.5 kBTU in the equation above like this:

kWh (14.5 kBTU) = 14.5 kBTU × 0.29307107017 = 4.250 kWh

We calculated that 14.5 kBTU is equal to 4.25 kWh. You can use the calculator above to check this result yourself.

Now, if you need a very quick conversion, we have already converted a bunch of kBTU to kWh and created this useful conversion chart:
