To avoid all the confusion when referring to this type of ACs units, let look at all the names that are used for air conditioners that are installed in the wall:

Here we’ll list all of them. It’s important to understand they are used interchangeably; they literally mean the same thing. The “best in wall air conditioner” is the same as the “best through the wall air conditioner”. Following are all the names to describe wall AC units:

  • “In-Wall Air Conditioners”. That’s because they are installed and operate inside the wall.
  • “Through-The-Wall Air Conditioner”. This usage is appropriate because the AC literally goes through the door. You don’t need venting as with portable ACs. The unit itself is designed to vent, and has access to indoors as well as outdoors. “Thru-the-wall air conditioner” is just a shorter version of the phrase.
  • “Wall-Mounted Air Conditioners”. In fact, the in-wall air conditioners are mounted inside the wall, not on the wall; the AC doesn’t hang from the wall, it is fixed through the wall. But when you look at it, looks like it’s hanging on the wall like a painting.
  • “Wall Sleeve Air Conditioner”. To install an AC through the wall, a sleeve is used around the unit to help with installation and, more importantly, to prevent vibrations and keeps the noise levels low.
  • “Built-In Air Conditioners”. Quite straightforward; air conditioners that are built inside the wall.

In short, just keep in mind that all these terms are used interchangeably:

Air conditioners that are built in the wall have a very good range of cooling capacities. Cooling capacity is a specification that tells us how well can an air conditioner cool; cooling power.

The cooling capacity of through the wall air conditioners is measured in BTU units (British Thermal Units).

What are sizes are the sleeve air conditioners?

The smallest in-wall air conditioners have a cooling capacity of 8,000 BTU. Example: Koldfront WTC8001W BTU air conditioner.

The biggest through-the-wall AC units have a cooling capacity of 14,000 BTU. Example: Keystone KSTAT14-2C with 14,000 BTU capacity.

8,000 BTU to 14,000 BTU thru-the-wall air conditioners can also be installed directly under the window.

For comparison, portable AC units have a similar capacity, other window air conditioners can reach a capacity of up to 15,000 BTU with 115V voltage. The best battery-powered AC unit can reach a 2,300 BTU capacity.

Some through the wall air conditioner are capable of proving heating output. They don’t work solemnly as a built-in air conditioner; they are, in fact, heat pumps.

The heater installed in the wall-mounted AC units can provide supplemental heating (low BTU) or can be used as a stand-alone heating unit (high BTU).

Coverage Area Of Through The Wall Air Conditioners Is Up To 700 Sq Ft

It’s important to properly size an in-wall air conditioner. The recommended coverage area of every AC is based on the BTU capacity (cooling output).

How big an in-wall air conditioner do you need?

EPA recommends that, for energy-saving operation, you require at about 20 BTU sleeve air conditioner output for every sq ft. That means that if you have a 400 sq ft space to cool, you would need about 8,000 BTU through the wall AC unit.

How Energy Efficient Are In Wall Air Conditioners? (EER Rating)

A more efficient in-wall air conditioner means you will pay less for electricity for the same cooling effect. It’s only natural that you should be looking for the most energy-efficient sleeve air conditioners.

How do we know which in-wall air conditioner is efficient and which is not?

EER rating. This is a basic energy-efficiency specification (Energy-Efficiency Ratio Rating). The higher the EER rating, the more energy-efficient in-wall air conditioner you’re looking at.

Friedrich CP08G10B is a small and compact unit. It’s capable of producing up to 8,000 BTU which can cover about 300 sq ft. In short, it is a small room in-wall air conditioner.

The true jewel is the low long-term electricity costs due to the record high energy-efficiency. Friedrich engineers managed to create a wall AC with, check this out, 11.2 EER rating. That’s just tremendous.

According to Friedrich CP08G10B’s EnergyGuide label, the 11.2 EER rating assures that you will spend only $62 if you run this 8,000 BTU unit 8 hours per day during the 3-month long summer season. Of course, this is an estimate, based on the electricity cost and so on, but $62 is as low as you can go with adequately cooling 300 sq ft room for 3 summer months.

Friedrich CP08G10B, however, is not without its shortcomings. It won’t be enough to cool down bigger rooms and it doesn’t have a heater. It does come with a sleeve included.

Overall, despite being last on the list, Friedrich CP08G10B is quite tremendous. The problem is that it’s quite small (for 300 sq ft or less) but it has the record high energy-efficiency that lowest the on-going electricity costs to the minimum:

  1. I have 3 adjacent rooms that are not closed off: the living room (336sqft) where the A/C unit is, dining room (162), and kitchen (114). There is an archway from the living to the dining and a small door from dining to kitchen. Should I be using the square footage from all three rooms to calculate the necessary BTU? It could be anywhere from 33-612 sq ft or 8000-15,000 BTU… I am replacing an 30 year old 11,000 unit that was very loud, and didn’t have an eco mode and therefore, was always on. I’m leaning towards a 12,000 unit. Any advice?

    • Hello Matthew, yes, you should add the square footage of each room. The combined area in your case is 612 sq ft. Now, you could use the ’20 BTU per sq ft’ rule of thumb but with this summer heat, having a bit bigger unit is not necessarily bad. 12,000 BTU does make sense; #2 Frigidaire FFTA123WA1 is a good choice but in your case #5 Keystone KSTAT14-2C would be a safer choice. Both have noise levels up to 61 dB; they are not the quietest wall air conditioners but max. 61 dB is not all that loud. Hope this helps.

    • Roswell, you’re right; wall units can be really big and can produce over 25,000 BTU cooling output. However, when you have such cooling needs, most people prefer to choose mini-split air conditioners; it’s just the more optimum choice.

  2. Hello. How should I take into consideration a tall ceiling. I have a 4-meter ceiling in half of the room. The other half is 2.5 meters. it a loft situation. The total sq footage is around 400 square feet.

    • Hello Waylon, all the recommendations are valid for a standard 8 ft ceiling. 4 meters is a bit more than 13 ft. If it’s in half of the room, and the other half is 8 ft, you have a 10.5 ft average ceiling height. That’s about a 31% higher ceiling than the standard ceiling; you should take that number into account when sizing a thru-the-wall air conditioner.

  3. I need to replace a GE (model number ASH18DBS1) 18000 BTU through-the-wall AC for my home. It is going in a room that is an open floor plan of a raised ranch- dining room, kitchen, living room with vaulted ceilings, and a hallway that leads to bedrooms and bathroom. We have always used the AC along with fans to get the cool air down the hall to the bedrooms. I am not finding any ACs that fit the bill in terms of size and BTUs, besides a Keystone from Walmart, which makes me nervous. Any advice? Would sealing the wall and getting a ductless system work better? Is it worth hiring a contractor to change the size of the hole to fit a new through-the-wall AC?

    • Hello Jamies, the fans are a good idea to evenly distribute the cool air throughout your home. 18,000 BTU units are pretty rare; if you know you need 18,000 BTU and have found the unit – Keystone from Walmart – that’s your only choice.
      Ductless air conditioners are definitely a very good choice. Something like Mr COOL 18k unit you can even DIY installation; you will also save a ton on electricity.
      Hiring a contractor to change the size of the hole is optional. It’s basically a hole. You don’t really need special skills to enlarge it, just some power tools and you’re done.

  4. I have a small 2 bedroom condo in south central Wisconsin—about 650 sq feet. It can get pretty hot and humid up there, so we bought 4 new Hunter ceiling fans. Now we want to replace the AC unit the prior owner shoved into the wall. It appears to be a window unit with plenty of duct tape all around the opening.
    I’ve read your reviews and it appears the Frigidaire 12,000 BTU might work or is 14,000 a must? I noticed the WA2, a bigger unit, costs less than the WA1 at ecomfort. Can you tell me about these two units and offer any recommendations?

    • Hello Camille, 12,000 BTU would work because it’s Wisconsin. In Florida, for example, you would be better off with 14,000 BTU unit. Frigidaire, in general, is one of the most reliable AC producers. Both units have superb energy efficiency (EER rating is 10.5) and are Energy Star rated. The cost difference is surprising but it probably has to do with the current supply/demand on the market; 12,000 BTU wall air conditioners are more popular. You can’t really go wrong with Frigidaire.     • Hello there, we’re a bit confused about what is meant by ‘option to exhaust’. Can you elaborate? Generally, through-the-wall units are installed, well, through the wall itself and require no other exhaust.

  6. We currently have a GREE ETAC 15HC230V30A-A. It has worked perfectly for 8 years, both heat and cool. Now it has developed a leak in the Freon line. A/C company said it would costs more to fix than replace. I can’t find any GREE products on line, but we really need the 15000 BTUH with the 20-3KW with the electric heat pump. Any suggestions?

    • Hello Janice, it’s really hard to find decent 15,000 BTU through-the-wall heat pumps. That freon leak does require repair and it’s true; the refrigerant leaks are notoriously costly to repair. The best option on the current market is the 10,000 BTU #3 LG LT1037HNR (you can find it in the table above). It does have an 11,200 BTU heating output, so it might be a decent replacement.

    • Hello there, generally, all wall air conditioners blow air at a 90-degree angle from the wall. However, you have those blades in front of the unit that direct airflow down, up, and sideways. Hope this helps.

    I have a 16.5″h x 27.25″w x 20″d sleeve permanently installed in my co-op apartment wall.

    Most of the reasonable a/c thru-wall heights nowadays seem to be 13.5″ to 14.5″.

    What do I use to fill in the 2″ to 3″ gap? Lumber? Styrofoam? Thanks for your help.

    • Hello there, the newer thru-the-wall units tend to have smaller dimensions. The best material would be one that has good insulation properties (high R-values) and prevent airflow through that hole. Styrofoam seems like a good option here. Hope it helps.

My wife and I just bought a condo here in Massachusetts, and it has an old GE in-wall AC that’s no longer working—it’s probably from the 80’s, when the building was built. The width of these units you recommend seems about right, but the old AC is only about 11 3/4” tall, whereas these are all around 14” or so. The existing sleeve is about 16” tall, and there’s a metal piece that sits above the AC inside the sleeve. I’m hoping we can remove that metal “buffer” while keeping the existing sleeve in place, and slide in a new unit—the Koldfront you recommended. My question (finally!): what do you recommend doing with the extra open area? I might try cutting some plywood to size, adding a layer of insulating foam, and sealing with silicon caulking. Thank you!

    • Hi Adam, thank you. Yes, the sleeve is there to support the AC unit, but (actually quite luckily) you have some extra space there that needs to be filled. If there wouldn’t be some extra space, the modern 14″ thru-the-wall units wouldn’t fit.
      That extra space needs to be closed. The best thing would be to use material that has good insulation properties; insulation foam you suggested would be the best. You just want to minimise the heat/cooling transfer through that leftover hole. Hope this helps.

    • Hi Linder, yes, the newer models are smaller. Using styrofoam is the way to go here, you are doing that correctly. The 250V plug will handle 230V without a problem. You are all set here, hope this helps.

    • Hi Gina, yes, all of them. This is how the AC thermostat works: When it reaches the set temperature, it stops. When that temperature falls by about 1 degree, it will start again, and will not stop until it reaches the set temperature again. Hope this helps.

  10. Nice comparisons chart.
    I am trying to decide between replacing really old through wall acs and split ductless units.

    I moved into a house that has a couple of really old GE through wall acs. Two of them are 8K btu 115V and the third is 18K 230V unit.
    The problem is that they let a TON of air into the house during the cold months.
    I plug up the vents from the inside. I am guessing they let a lot of dust into the house also!

    I am guessing that newer models will not let too much outside air and dirt into room.
    I am trying to decide between through wall air conditioners or split mini ductless.
    Big price difference between the two.
    What would you suggest in this day and age?


    • Hi Sunny, in this day and age, the split ductless units are all the rage. We see a lot of people swapping these old wall units with mini split heat pumps (to get the heating as well). Yes, the initial price difference is enormous, but when you account for the electricity savings in the next 10 or 20 years, the heat pumps arguably pay for themselves due to these savings. But, yeah, checking that split ductless bill can be terrifying.
