Coway Air Purifiers: 5 Coway Models Compared, Review, Rated (2021)

Coway is a big name in the air purifiers industry. Actually, we can almost say ‘the’ big name.

This once small Korean company has been established in 1989 and focused on home health.

Fast-forward 30 years: Coway is one of the biggest air purifiers brands with almost 5,000 employees. They are present in 40+ countries and are enjoying quite a lot of success in the US.

In fact, Coway is, alongside Dyson, Alen, Molekule, and Levoit, one of the 5 top air purifier brands in the US.

Among consumer and HVAC experts, Coway is known for one thing is specific:

Performance.

While other air purifier brands might be all about the looks, Coway is all about performance.

Independent testing continuously shows that Coway air purifiers like Coway Airmega 400 and especially Coway AP-1512HH are the top-performing air purifiers.

In this review of the 5 best Coway air purifiers, we’ll not answer if ‘Coway air purifiers are any good’. With Coway, that’s a given.

What we really want to assess is if the Coway units are worth all the hype they enjoy. Even more important, we’ll look at a spec-by-spec comparison table to analyze which Coway air purifiers are best and follow that individual reviews of top Coway air cleaners.

Here’s the quick Coway nomenclature:

They offer two series of air purifiers – the coveted Airmega Series and the AP Series. It’s not surprising that both top-rated Coway air purifiers are the latest models from each series: the Coway Airmega 400 Smart and the now legendary Coway AP-1512HH Mighty.

Here is the full list of the top 5 best Coway air purifiers:

Coway Filtration System With Max2 HEPA Filters

Coway uses two different filtration system for the two series:

The 4-stage filtration system is an upgraded but conventional filtration system. It’s comprise of a pre-filter that catches larger particles, deodorizant filter for odors, True HEPA filter, and vital ion filter (which can be turned on/off, depending on your needs).

4 stage coway filtration system with pre-filter, activated carbon, true hepa and optional ionizer filter
Conventional Coway 4-stage filtration system; True HEPA Filter is the most important part.

The Coway AP Series’s key filter is the True HEPA filter; Coway calls their ‘Green True HEPA filter’. It’s designed to capture and reduce up to 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns in the air, including pollen, smoke particles, and so on. It does most of the work.

The Airmega Series, on the other hand, uses an advanced Airmega Max2 filter. This is a Coway combination of both True HEPA filter (for small particles) and activated carbon (for odor); it’s a 2-in-1 filter.

The Airmega Max 2 filter works exceptionally well against even the smallest air pollutants, such as smoke particles, dust, pollen, mold, and so on. What is more, it can remove cigarette smoke and other odors, including VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Both Coway filtration systems are made with performance in mind. If you would have to compare the effectiveness of 4-stage filtration vs. Airmega Max2, the latter has the edge.

As we’ll see, Coway’s Airmega Max2 filters are capable of removing air pollutants in much bigger areas than the 4-stage filtration system.

Coverage Area (Based On CADR Rating And ACH)

The CADR rating is the most important specification of an air purifier’s effectiveness. Remember, Coway is all about performance; thus it must have a high CADR rating.

If you check at the comparison of the best Coway air purifier above, you can see that they all have a CADR rating above 200. Most air purifier brands will have some units that can cross the 200 CADR; and some don’t.

All of Coway’s units, however, have exceptional 200+ CADR effectiveness in removing dust, pollen, and smoke from indoor air.

You can see that both the Coway Airmega model – the 400 Smart and 300S – have an outstanding CADR rating of 350 and 340, respectively. That’s they can also cover larger 1,000+ sq ft areas and are considered large room air purifiers.

Coway AP air purifiers, on the other hand, are considered medium-sized room air purifiers. They are the most versatile ones; you can use them in the bedroom, living room, kitchen, and so on.

Example: Coway AP-1512HH Mighty is the most popular Coway air purifier (the one that gets all the performance rewards). It’s mean to be used in a 361 sq ft area, but for such areas, it has an outrageously high 246 CADR rating.

The ratio of coverage area vs. CADR ratings (sometimes indirectly indicated by air changes per hour or ACH) is fantastically high for the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty. That’s the reason behind its superb award-winning performance.

Noise Levels

Usually, the high performing air purifiers with high CADR rating be quite noisy. They can easily score 55+ dB noise levels.

Coway air purifiers are considered to be very quiet. All of them have noise levels below 55 dB, even on the highest fan speed setting, and you’ll rarely find a Coway air purifier reviewer that would point out noise issues.

That said, the best Coway air purifier – the Airmega 400 Smart – is way ahead of every other device, including the famously quiet Alen BreatheSmart air purifiers (designed for bedrooms). With noise levels reaching only 43.2 dB, the 400 Smart is not only the quietest Coway air purifier but one of the quietest air purifiers in general.

Price Of Coway Air Purifier

It’s always smart to consider the cost of air purifiers. People usually ask, ‘Are Coway air purifiers worth it?’.

The answer is quite simple:

Yes. Coway focuses on high-performance air purifiers; these obviously can’t be the cheapest models. However, if you check the price per performance rating, Coway is the best price-performance air purifier brand in the high-performance category. For low-performance and high price-performance, you can check out Okaysou air purifiers with ridiculously low prices for excellent specs.

The bigger Airmega units can cost anywhere from $400 to $800. This is in range with Dyson, Molekule, and Airdog X5 price range. The reason for a higher price is exceptional performance and the fact that you can use Coway Airmega units whole-house air purifiers.

In short, you usually only need 1; people tend to buy 3 or even 4 smaller but absurdly popular Coway AP-1512HH Mighty units.

These medium-sized and small room Coway units cost anywhere from $150 to $300.

Here’s the most important part:

Given the performance-driven design, both the large room Coway Airmega and medium and small room Coway AP air purifiers are worth the price (especially if you compare them with other units based on price-performance).

Let’s look at the reviews of the best 5 Coway air purifier from both Airmega and AP lines:

1. Coway Airmega 400 Smart Review (Overall Best Coway Air Purifier)

Overall Best Coway Air Purifier
Coverage Area: 1,560 sq ft (2 ACH)
CADR Rating: 350
Filters: 3-stage: Max2 HEPA with washable prefilter, Deodorization filter
Filter Lifespan: 6 (Deo) and 12 (Max2 HEPA) months
Noise Levels: Up to only 43.2 dB
Dimensions: 14.8 x 22.9 x 14.8 inches
Weight: 24.7 lbs
Price: $$$$
Rating: 4.9 out of 5 stars

Coway Airmega 400 Smart is the one true powerhouse in the air purifier industry. It’s made by Coway – which immediately means ‘performance’ – and it’s the biggest and latest Airmega model.

The capability to improve indoor air quality is just outstanding. Coway Airmega 400 Smart has a maximum coverage area of 1,560 sq ft (while still maintaining 2 air changes per hour). This is thanks to its record-breaking 350 CADR rating. Such a high CADR rating is only possible to achieve thanks to the upgraded Airmega Max2 filtration system.

Of all the Coway air purifiers, the Airmega 400 Smart is the best at removing both large and small particles (thanks to Max2 True HEPA filter) as well as getting rid of undesired odors (from the kitchen or from outdoors).

On top of that, the 400 Smart is the quietest Coway air purifier with 43.2 dB max. noise levels. It comes with advanced Coway features such as air quality monitoring, Auto Mode (fan speed is adjusted to the level on indoor air pollutants), and tells you when the Max2 filter needs replacing.

The inevitable drawback of air purifiers – including the superb Coway 400 Smart – is the higher weight (almost 25 lbs) and higher single-unit price (because you need only 1 and can even use it as a whole-house air cleaner).

All in all, the Coway Airmega 400 Smart is one of the most remarkable air purifiers you can get your hands on. Here’s the review summary:

Coway Airmega 400 Smart

Pros
  • Amazing performance; 350 CADR rating can cover up to 1,560 sq ft rooms, or even whole houses
  • The quietest Coway air purifier; the decibel meter goes only to 43.2 even on the highest setting
  • Has the new Airmega Max2 filters that combine the actions of True HEPA filter and activated carbon filter
  • Not only the best Coway air purifier; it’s quite possible the best air purifier in 2021 in general
Cons
  • It’s heavy because it’s big – weights almost 25 lbs
  • Compared to smaller Coway AP units, it has a higher price tag. But you do only need 1

2. Coway AP-1512HH Mighty Review (Most Popular Coway Air Purifier)

Most Popular Coway Air Purifier
Coverage Area: 361 sq ft
CADR Rating: 246
Filters: 4-Stage Filtration (Prefilter, Deodorization, HEPA, Vital Ion)
Filter Lifespan: 6 (Deo) and 12 (HEPA) months

The Coway AP-1512HH is legendary. It’s one of the most popular air purifiers in the world; it usually gets 1st place for performance on all independent testing people do in garages, and it has a level of price-performance no other air purifier in its class can reach.

We at LearnMetrics just hope our dear readers won’t write 100 angry emails per day because the Coway AP-1512HH is in the 2nd place.

If you know one Coway air purifier, it’s the Coway AP-1512HH. This is the AP model that’s remarkable in every kind of way:

  • Coway AP-1512HH has a 246 CADR rating for a 361 sq ft recommended coverage area. Crazy specs.
  • It has a 4-stage filtration system, including the True HEPA filter and air ionizer that can be turned on/off according to your needs.
  • With an average rating of 4.7/5, it’s the highest-rated air purifier on Amazon (at least of those who got 5,000+ reviews).
  • It doesn’t cost a ton. HVAC engineers looking at the specs would never suspect that it would cost less than $250. But it does.

People are usually buying them in bulk; 3 or even 4 in one go. The Coway AP-1512HH is the quintessential air purifier; that’s the bottom line.

The only thing LM really needs to explain is why is the Airmega 400 Smart better than Coway AP-1512HH. In all honestly, they are neck-a-neck. The Airmega 400 is huge, has a 350 CADR rating, and can remove dust from an entire house. It’s also quieter than Coway AP-1512HH.

Nonetheless, with Coway AP-1512HH we’re out of words. It’s just all that an air purifier is supposed to be, at least performance-wise:

Coway AP-1512HH

Pros
  • Most popular Coway air purifier that beats all other brands in pretty much every independent testing
  • Ultimate performance; 246 CADR rating for 361 sq ft recommended coverage area; these are insane specs
  • It’s the highest-rated air purifier on Amazon (of the top ones with at least 5,000 reviews)
  • The price is so affordable that people usually buy 3 or 4 Coway AP-1512HH in one go
Cons
  • It’s not a whole-house air purifier; it will accommodate most not extra-large rooms True HEPA filter replacement is about $50

3. Coway Airmega 300S Review (Smart App Connected Strong Air Purifier)

Smart App Connected Strong Air Purifier
Coverage Area: 1,256 sq ft
CADR Rating: 340 CFM Max. Airflow
Filters: 3-stage: Max2 HEPA with washable prefilter, Deodorization filter
Filter Lifespan: 6 (Deo) and 12 (HEPA) months
Noise Levels: 28–52 dB
Dimensions: 13.6 x 13.6 x 21.2 inches
Weight: 21.4 lbs
Price: $$$$
Rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars

After looking at how remarkable the #1 Coway Airmega 400 Smart is, it’s hard to see how any Airmega air purifier could compare. Well, the Airmega 300S comes the closest in terms of performance. This is not at all surprising:

Coway Airmega 300S is the predecessor of the Airmega 400 Smart.

Basically, the 300S is a very powerful extra-large room Coway air purifier. It’s just a little less strong than 400 Smart.

It’s max. coverage area is 1,256 sq ft, based on the 340 CFM airflow and 2 air changes per hour. In short, it can change all the air (while functioning as an air purifier) in a 1,256 sq ft room every 30 minutes.

The only spec that is in the 300S favor, compared to 400 Smart, is the lower weight (about 3 lbs difference there). It also has all the smart features Coway offers, including dual suction, air quality monitoring, smart Auto Mode that adjusts the fan speed to indoor air quality, and Coway IoCare mobile app.

All in all, the 300S was the best air large room Coway air purifiers for some time, but then the #1 pick Coway 400 Smart came along.

Coway Airmega 300S

Pros
  • Very powerful (340 CFM airflow) with the ability to purify the air in areas up to 1,256 sq ft
  • Comes with the latest smart features, like Auto Mode, dual suction, and Coway IoCare app
  • Has 3 pounds less than Coway 400 Smart
Cons
  • Powerful but not as powerful as it’s successor; the Coway 400 Smart
  • Still tends to have a higher price point, despite the better model being on the market

4. Coway AP-1216L Tower (Best Smaller Coway Air Purifier)

Best Smaller Coway Air Purifier
Coverage Area: 330 sq ft
CADR Rating: 235
Filters: 4-Stage Filtration (Prefilter, Odor Filter, HEPA, Vital Ion)
Filter Lifespan: 12 months (HEPA filter)
Noise Levels: 21-52 dB
Dimensions: 10.7 x 10.5 x 32.7 inches
Weight: 13.9 lbs
Price: $$$$
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Some people also need a high-performance air purifier for a smaller room. It’s just that they don’t have anywhere to put it. The Coway AP-1216L Tower is a perfect small(ish) room air purifier that doesn’t take a lot of space.

Dyson started with the whole tower design of air purifiers, and all the major brands, including Coway got wind of it. The advantage of the tower structure is that Coway AP-1216L, for example, doesn’t take a lot of space.

It’s tall, yes, but it has only a 10×10 inch (about) base. That means you can put it in a crammed room easier.

Characteristically for a Coway air purifier, it has a formidable performance. 235 CADR rating for a 330 sq ft recommended coverage area is on par with the crazy specs of the popular Coway AP-1512HH.

Best yet, it has price-performance. Performance is a given with the Coway air purifiers, the low price, however, is not. The Coway AP-1216L, nonetheless, has both. It’s a 235 CADR rating air cleaner that costs less than $300:

Coway AP-1216L

Pros
  • Best for small(ish) rooms up to 330 sq ft
  • Tower structure; it’s tall, but you only need about 10×10 inch area to place it in a room
  • Incredible price-performance; performance is obviously the main focus of Coway, but Coway AP-1216L also has a low price point
Cons
  • It’s in a company of 240+ CADR rating Coway air purifiers; difficult to outshine them specs-wise
  • Tower structure could be a bit wobble if not place on the perfectly straight floor

5. Coway Airmega 200m Review (Older Model That’s Still Good)

Older Model That's Still Good
Coverage Area: 361 sq ft
CADR Rating: 246
Filters: 4-Stage Filtration (Prefilter, Deodorization, HEPA, Vital Ion)
Filter Lifespan: 6 (Deo) and 12 (HEPA) months
Noise Levels: 24.4–53.8 dB
Dimensions: 9.6 x 16.8 x 18.3 inches
Weight: 15.4 lbs
Price: $$$$
Rating: 4.2 out of 5 stars

The once best-in-line Coway Airmega 200m is still a good choice. Obviously, the Airmega 300S and especially 400 Smart have surpassed the Coway Airmega 200m. The specs and the technology have advanced, but Coway Airmega 200m does have something that even the Airmega 400 Smart doesn’t have:

Proven reliability.

All the older models that stay in production for longer do that for a reason. The reason in many cases – including the Coway Airmega 200m’s – is that they have proven reliability and a great track record.

Here’s one look at the specs:

Coway Airmega 200m has a 246 CADR rating, and it’s recommended for a 361 sq ft area. That’s just the beauty of Coway; exceptional performance in every model, from the oldest to the newest.

The Airmega 200m does have a lower price than 300S and 400 Smart. It’s a much better model than the best models of some brands. But there is strong competition among the Coway air purifiers, and the Airmega 200m is just not capable of keeping up with the specs and tech advances.

Coway Airmega 200m

Pros
  • Has solid specs, especially regarding performance, which is to expected from a Coway air cleaner
  • Slightly lower price
Cons
  • Still has the 4-stage filtration, not the new Max2 filters like newer Airmega models
  • It’s an older model, now rendered quite obsolete by Airmega 300S and 400 Smart

Coway Air Purifiers FAQ

Of course, with a brand that sells so many air purifiers, there are quite a few questions you might have. Here LM answer the most frequent questions:

Is Coway Air Purifier Good?

‘Good’ is an understatement. Coway air purifiers are regarded as one of the best air purifiers you can get; especially performance-wise. The performance specification, such as CADR rating, as well as a ratio of recommended coverage area and CADR rating, are off the charts.

What is more, the performance of Coway air purifiers was tested by several independent studies. Despite testing more than 10 brands, Coway air purifiers not only received top scores, they scored 1st place almost every time.

The most awarded one is the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty.

Does Coway Air Purifier Emit Ozone?

Ozone emitting is usually a concern for some customers. Some Coway air purifiers that include the air ionizer filter do produce a very small amount of ozone.

However, this needs to be put in perfective; the amount of ozone some Coway air purifiers produce is negligible and has no proven effect on humans or pets.

How Long Do Coway Filters Last?

Coway deodorization filter last for 6 months, and True HEPA filters last for 12 months. They need to be regularly replaced to keep Coway air purifiers effective.

To help you out, the newest models have the filter indicator. It tells you how ‘dirty’ or close to capacity Coway air purifier filters are and when the replacement is needed.
