Dry air in the bedroom is not ideal. Nobody really likes waking up with dry eyes, skin, and a full nose. All of these may be consequences of low bedroom relative humidity levels. Especially during the winter heating season, a good humidifier for the bedroom might come in very handy.
Now, how do you figure out which humidifier is the best for the bedroom?
Not all humidifiers are the same. Some of them are better to be put on a nightstand than others. Some are too loud to sleep with, and others are just too small or too big for a bedroom.
One thing is for sure:
During the heating season, relative humidity levels can fall below 30%. If that happens in your bedroom, you’re effectively sleeping for 8 hours per day exposed to the dry air. Many of us do suffer the consequences of dry air, which may include dry eyes, dried-out skin, and even dandruff production.
Sleep Foundation suggests that 30-50% or 40-60% bedroom humidity levels might be what we should be aiming for.

To elevate all these potential problems, we have gathered a list of the best bedroom humidifiers for winter. These range from small humidifiers for bedrooms to big humidifiers for large bedrooms (master bedrooms). Bedroom humidifiers are quite inexpensive; all of them cost a lot less than $130, for example.
Here are the 5 specifications that make a humidifier perfect for use in bedrooms:
- Matches the bedroom size. You don’t want too small a bedroom humidifier not do you want one that’s too big. Cute small below 1L humidifiers are too small and the big 5L humidifiers are overkill for a bedroom.
- Low noise levels. If you buy a bedroom humidifier with 50+ dB noise levels, you won’t be able to comfortably sleep with it on your nightstand. The best humidifiers for the bedroom should have below 45 dB noise levels. The quietest bedroom humidifiers have below 35 dB noise levels.
- Easy to clean. Cleaning a humidifier can be a nightmare. When choosing the best humidifier for your bedroom, you should opt for humidifiers that are also easy to clean.
- More than 8 hours running time. If you buy a small capacity humidifier with large humidity output, the water reservoir will be emptied during the night. You make wake up in below 35% relative humidity levels bedroom again. Make sure that the running time of a bedroom humidifier is at least 8 hours.
Based on these key criteria, we can determine which humidifiers are the best to be used in a bedroom. You can check the whole list of the best bedroom humidifiers, complete with the spec-by-spec comparison table, and reviews here:

Before checking these bedside humidifiers out, let’s first look into specifications that make the best humidifiers truly the best. We’ll start with sizing a humidifier to fit our bedroom:
1. What Size Humidifier Do I Need For A Bedroom?
Bedroom humidifiers come in all shapes and sizes. The size of a humidifier is expressed in L (liters) or gallons of water the water reservoir can hold. It is important that you don’t buy a humidifier that’s either too big or too small for your bedroom.
A neat rule of thumb rule for sizing a humidifier is this:
1L Capacity = 100 sq ft Coverage Area
Using this rule you can get quite a good estimate on how big a humidifier you need. Now, the key question is this:
How big is your bedroom?
According to CDR Design Build, the average master bedroom size in the US is 224 sq ft (that’s a 14×16 bedroom). Other common master bedroom dimensions are 12×16 (168 square feet) and 12×14 (168 square feet). The biggest master bedrooms can range up to about 400 sq ft (that’s 20×20 bedroom).
For babies, kids, and younger adults, the standard bedroom size is 132 sq ft (11×12). Another common dimension for a standard bedroom is 144 sq ft (12×12).
What does this all mean in terms of humidifier sizing?
Well, if all bedrooms are between 100 sq ft and 400 sq ft, that means you will need (applying the rule of thumb here) a humidifier that has between 1L and 4L water capacity.
Small humidifiers for bedrooms with below 1L capacity are in almost all cases too small to adequately increase the relative humidity levels where you sleep. On the other hand, having a 6L humidifier in a large bedroom is usually considered overkill.
Do measure your bedroom before buying a humidifier. Check the specified coverage area on humidifiers, whilst keeping in mind the ‘1L Capacity = 100 sq ft Coverage Area’ rule of thumb.
Note: Can a humidifier be too big for a bedroom? It certainly can be; 6L humidifiers are too big even for large bedrooms. Nonetheless, it’s much better to have a humidifier that’s a bit too big than a humidifier that’s too small for your bedroom size. It’s worth keeping that in mind when deciding between a bigger and smaller humidifier for the bedroom.
2. Silent Humidifier For Bedroom (Below 45 dB)
The last thing you want is a humidifier that’s too loud. If you’re going to put a humidifier on a nightstand, it better be whisper silent.
What does it mean to have a ‘silent bedside humidifier’?
Well, most humidifiers are fairly silent. However, when you’re checking the specifications, you should look for bedroom humidifiers that are as quiet as possible.
Most humidifiers generate about 45 dB of noise levels. Anything below that is considered OK for a bedroom. Anything above that is not optimal for use in bedrooms.
The quietest humidifier for the bedroom is the #4 Levoit Classic 100 (check the comparison table below). It generates between 24 and 3o dB on noise; that’s quieter than a whisper. You will have no problem sleeping with such a silent humidifier on your nightstand, for example.
Generally, bigger humidifiers tend to be louder. No mist or warm mist humidifiers are quieter than cool mist humidifiers; cool mist humidifiers for bedrooms use a fan to blow out the mist, and that fan generates the most decibels.
Considering that the best place to put a humidifier in the bedroom is on the nightstand, checking the noise levels is an important part when picking the best humidifier for your bedroom.
3. Bedroom Humidifiers Should Be Easy To Clean
Cleaning a humidifier can be a daunting task. As will all humidifier types, some bedroom humidifiers are easier to clean than others.
Easy clean humidifiers for bedroom should include these properties:
- Smooth surfaces. The outer shell should be a smooth as possible. That will make them easy to clean with just a wet cloth.
- Little non-accessible nooks and crannies. These are the hardest to clean in any bedroom humidifier. The bottom of the water reservoir should have clean surfaces; these will be easily accessible for manual cleaning. If you find a good bedroom humidifier that has some nooks and crannies, it’s best to use vinegar to them out properly from time to time.
- Easy disassembly and assembly. When it comes to cleaning, the most underrated part is how easy a humidifier can be disassembled to the individual components and reassembled again. The bedroom humidifiers with the least number of moving parts are easier to disassembled and reassembled again.
- Dishwasher safe. Having a dishwasher-safe bedroom humidifier makes the cleaning process much easier. Of course, you can manually clean the humidifier with your hands, but if a dishwasher can do the same thing automatically, that’s certainly less work for you. Do note that not all humidifiers for bedrooms are dishwasher safe.
You can read more about easy to clean humidifiers in this post.
4. Reservoir Should Last For At Least 8 Hours (+ Timer Is A Bonus)
Running time is a big factor whenever we’re choosing a humidifier, be it for a bedroom or any other room. For bedroom humidifiers, however, it’s especially important that they last for at least as long as you sleep. If you have a healthy sleeping pattern, that’s at least 8 hours.
Now, most bedroom humidifiers will have 10+ hours specified running time. Do note, however, that the specified running time is the maximum time a humidifier can function; but that’s the time measured at the lowest humidity output setting.
Example: A 3L humidifier has a specified running time of ‘up to 12 hours’. That should be OK for a bedroom humidifier, right? Well, not exactly. Such a bedside humidifier will last 12 hours only on the low humidity output setting; 250 ml/h output.
If you were to set it to high output – we usually do that when we want the increase in humidity levels – the output will rise to 500 ml/h and the whole water reservoir will be empty in 6 hours.
To avoid waking up to a depleted water reservoir, it makes sense to buy a humidifier for the bedroom with at least 16 hours of running time. That will ensure that we enjoy the increased humidity throughout the night, even if we set the humidifier to the high moisture output setting.
The perfect bedroom humidifier should include a timer. With a timer, you can set a humidifier to work for 8 hours, and thereby regulate both your humidifier as well as have certain control over your sleeping pattern.
With all this in mind, let’s have a look at the best humidifier for bedroom for sale in 2023:

OPOLAR EVO3 is an evaporative humidifier, perfect for a bedroom. Its mechanism is based on natural water evaporation; thus it doesn’t generate mist (concentrated high relative humidity cloud). Instead, it blows us moist air. This is a quiet and effective way to increase moisture levels in the bedroom at night. Overall, the OPOLAR EVO3 is the best humidifier for the bedroom.
It has a water reservoir capacity of 3L. That’s a perfect size for a bedroom with sizes up to 300 square feet (up to 18×18). The key point here is that has a 17-hour running time; even if you run it on top moisture output speed, it will last for the whole night, with a significant water reserve in the tank.
On top of that, it has a timer. You can set it at 1h, 2h, 4h, or 8h, depending on how long you wish to sleep. The built-in humidistat can be set to any indoor humidity levels you find the best for you. It can raise the relative humidity levels from 20-30% up to 40-60% with ease.
OPOLAR EVO3 is also a very easy bedroom humidifier to clean. The outer shell is comprised of smooth surfaces without problematic (and redundant) nooks and crannies. The tank is large enough you can fit your entire hand in which makes the cleaning process much easier.
It does have an average noise level (45 dB), however, and it comes with a significant increase in price tag compared to other less quality-oriented bedroom humidities.
All in all, OPOLAR EVO3 is the best evaporative humidifier for bedrooms. You can put it in standard-sized and master bedroom and it will keep the humidity levels high enough for comfortable sleeping:

If you have a large bedroom with dry air, you need something like TaoTronics TT-AH001. TaoTronics TT-AH001 is a large bedroom humidifier with a 4L capacity and very low noise levels. It is the best quiet humidifier for master bedrooms.
TaoTronics TT-AH001 has a specified coverage area of 107-322 sq ft. Keep in mind that this is a large 4L humidifier for large bedrooms that could potentially be used in big master bedrooms. The most common square footage for a master bedroom – 224 square feet or 14×16 dimensions – is the ideal place to put TaoTronics TT-AH001 humidifier in.
Now, large humidifiers tend to have higher noise levels. Fortunately, this is not the case with TaoTronics TT-AH001. Even when operating at the highest moisture output, it has a very low 38 dB noise levels.
It has a running time of 12-30 hours. That means that when set to low speed, the tank will be sufficient to last for 30 hours. When you put it in the high cool mist output, the TT-AH001 will generate more than 300 ml/h of cool mist output and it will still be able to run for 12 hours.
In short, the TaoTronics TT-AH001 is the best humidifier for very large bedrooms and it comes at surprisingly low cost for a 4L humidifier:

Pure Enrichment MistAire is a very popular choice as a small humidifier for the bedroom. Most people who live in flats don’t really have a 200+ sq ft bedroom. For them, the Pure Enrichment MistAire is an ideal choice. It’s one of the most affordable and best small humidifiers for bedrooms.
With only 1.5L water reservoir capacity, the Pure Enrichment MistAire is one of the smallest bedroom humidifiers that still make sense. Mind you, there are smaller units available, but if you have a small bedroom, the Pure Enrichment MistAire will do its job really well. It has a specified coverage area of up to 250 sq ft but it’s best for small bedrooms with 100-150 sq ft total area.
On top of that, it has a quiet operation. That’s in part because it’s a smaller humidifier and because it has ultrasonic technology. Human ears cannot hear the ultrasonic noises and therefore most of the noise that Pure Enrichment MistAire generates doesn’t bother the sleeper one bit.
The additional advantage of smaller humidifiers is that they are easier to clean. You might have some problems with cleaning the internal parts, however, because they tend to be less reachable for manual washing.
It has a very long up to 25-hour running time. That pretty much means this is a set it and forget it humidifier. You can put it on a nightstand by your bedside, turn it on, and it will run for an entire day without a refill.
In short, the Pure Enrichment MistAire is the best small humidifier for bedroom. It’s immensely popular and has more than 60,000 positive reviews on Amazon:

Levoit is one of the most well-known humidifier brands. They realized that the low noise levels are an absolute must for a bedroom humidifier. That’s why they have engineered the quietest humidifier for a bedroom – the Levoit Classic 100.
While most silent humidifiers have below 40 dB noise levels, the Levoit Classic 100 is whisper quiet even compared to those. It generates between 24-30 dB for low and high moisture output speed. These are the lowest noise levels of any humidifier for a bedroom.
What’s even more surprising is that, despite being so quiet, the Levoit Classic 100 is not actually that small. It’s a 2.4L humidifier with up to 290 sq ft coverage area. That means that is quiet enough that you won’t heat it even if it’s by your bedside, and sizable enough to adequately increase relative humidity levels above 40% even in a master bedroom.
What is more, the Levoit Classic 100 has a very long 24-hour running time.
This is basically the best price-performance humidifier; Levoit is known for producing capable humidifiers at a very low cost, and the Levoit Classic 100 is no exception. Here is the review of the quietest humidifier for the bedroom:
5. Best Bedside Humidifier For Nightstand: Raydrop Nightstand Humidifier

Noise Levels: | Under 32 dB |

Running Hours: | Up to 9 hours |

The best place to place your bedroom humidifier is on the nightstand. Humidifiers, even the ones designed for bedroom use, tend to be rather broad, however. Raydrop is an example of the perfect nightstand humidifier because it has a very small cross-section.
In fact, the cross-section of Raydrop is 6.3 x 5.5. If you check your nightstand and measure these dimensions, you will realize that you have plenty of room left for a nightstand light, phone charger, alarm clock, even your glasses.
Despite being so slim, Raydrop bedside humidifier has an ample 1.7L large water reservoir. That tank size is essential. When on a high-speed setting, this smaller nightstand humidified will produce 240 ml/h of mist output. That means that the whole tank will be drained in about 7 hours. That’s sadly not the full 8 hours. If it has a 2L tank, that would be perfect.
However, the advantage of a small bedside humidifier is not only that you can place it on a nightstand; it’s low noise levels as well.
Raydrop generates only as much as 32 dB noise levels. That makes it one of the quietest bedside humidifiers on the market. The low noise levels are especially important for a nightstand humidifier. It’s not on your closet or on top of a desk during the night; it’s right next to you. It’s essential that it has a quiet operation.
All in all, Raydrop is one of the slimmest humidifiers that will easily fit on a nightstand. It has a low running time but it’s one of the very few humidifiers that is quiet enough to be placed directly by your bedside:
These were bedroom humidifiers that combine low noise levels, adequate tank size, and sufficient running time to be placed in the bedroom. All of them are more than capable of increasing humidity levels and may be the very reason why you wake up more refreshed.
Sirs/Madame,
You provided very good explanations However, you did not mention the ideal level of humidity for a room in a house, say 15 ft. X 10 ft. We have Bonaire Model BCM740 series.
Your recommendation is highly appreciated.
Hi Sami, the recommended indoor humidity levels are between 30% and 50%. This is for all houses for every room. Hope this helps.
