If you want to install an air conditioning and heating system in 4 different rooms, your best option is a 4 zone mini-split system. These quad systems are becoming increasingly popular because they are both energy-efficient, require no ductwork, and are easy to install/maintain.
Here’s how you can distribute the 4 indoor units in your home:
4 zone mini-split = Bedroom + Kids Room + Living Room + Kitchen
The outside unit with a compressor generated all the power (powered by 2,000+ W). Most 4 zone mini-split units have a total capacity of 36,000 BTU. This total capacity is enough to cool up to 1,800 sq. ft. of space.
The most common individual head capacity is 9,000 BTU. For example, a 36,000 BTU quad zone mini-split unit can have 4 9,000 BTU units. The best ones – Mitsubishi and PIONEER 4 zone mini split in the table below – are comprised exclusively of 9,000 BTU indoor heads. Each one is capable of cooling up to 450 sq ft.
Daikin 4 zone mini split unit, for example, comes with a big 18,000 BTU unit, appropriate for bigger rooms (up to 900 sq. ft.). However, it’s coupled with a smaller 7,000 BTU units.
You will find all the top 4 zone mini split units below. In the commentary (following the table), we explain how the SEER and HSPF rating, the reputation of the company, price, and review average affects the ranking in the table:

Commentary With Short 4 Zone Mini Split Reviews
For all air conditioners – including 4 zone mini-split systems – it’s important to have a high SEER rating. 18+ SEER rating means that such a system will be very energy-efficient in the summer.
Equally important is the HSPF rating in the winter. 10+ HSPF rating systems can save you more than $100 in electricity bills each winter.
Mitsubishi quad zone mini split is the best not because of the best specs, but purely due to the remarkable reputation Mitsubishi has. You will notice the high 11 HSPF rating which makes this heat pump especially cost-efficient in the winter.
PIONEER might be a newer brand but their 4 zone mini split unit has exceptional specs. The SEER rating of 22.5 is incredible, it has a decent HSPF rating as well.
Fujitsu is also a reputable brand. They offer premium 4 zone mini-split systems, comprised of AOU36RLXFZH / 2-ASU7RLF1 / 2-ASU12RLF1 indoor units. These cross the 10 HSPF and 20 SEER rating.
Daikin quad zone mini split has that one big 18,000 BTU head people love. On top of that, the Daikin unit has the highest HSFP rating of 12.2 (perfect for the heating season).
One of the very best 4 zone mini-split units is the Senville SENA-36HF/Q. It has superb specs (SEER = 22.5, for example) but is cheaper compared to the reputable brands. If you’re looking for a budget 4 zone mini-split, the Senville Quad is financially the smartest choice.
We are building a new ICF super insulated home 1500 sq ft 9 ft ceilings in NE Iowa region 5 . We are interested in Daikin 4MXS36RMVJU / 2-CTXS07LVJU / FTXS12LVJU / FTXS18LVJU but I see they say heating is only down to 5 degrees .we would like something that would still provide heat down to -15 or so .This will be are only heat source so what units can you recommend for our needs. Our needs are good flitering and humdity control along with high HSPF for heating . we would prefer one ceiling cassette for 500 sq ft Kitchen living area and 3 wall units for bedrooms each about 150 sq ft .the house is 1500 sq ft. Thanks Mike Murphy
