We use both of these units to denote heat energy. Here is how they are defined:

• Therm is heat energy equal to 100,000 BTUs (British Thermal Units). 1 BTU is the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1Â°F.
• kBTU stands for kilo British Thermal Units. 1 kBTU is the heat energy equal to 1,000 BTUs.

From these descriptions, we can see the following relationship between the two units:

1 Therm = 100 kBTU

Basically, 1 therm is equal to 100 kBTU. That makes the conversion super easy. We can use this therms to kBTU formula:

kBTU = Therms Ã— 100

Namely, to calculate therms from kBTU, we need to multiply therms by a factor of 100.

Quick Example: How many kBTU is 50 therms of heat energy? Let’s just insert 50 therms into the equation like this:

kBTU (50 Therms) = 50 Therms Ã— 100 = 5,000 kBTU

We see that 50 therms is equivalent to 5,000 kBTU. You can use the calculator above to check this result.
