Cool air in. Hot air out. That’s the basic thermodynamics of every air conditioner.

This article doesn’t quite seem to grasp the facts of evaporative coolers and thermodynamics. Evaporative coolers can lower the actual temperature of the air. Hot dry air in, cool humid air out. The process of the water evaporating into the air takes energy (read, heat) out of the air. In already-humid environments, the water can’t evaporate, no effect. In dry environments, the air temperature will actually decrease with a swamp cooler.
Also, the Zerobreeze is an interesting inclusion. Thermodynamically, no, it will not provide any cooling. It may blow cool air towards the user, but at least as much energy as it removes from the air to cool it down must come out the exhaust port.
Consider, if you are drawing 650W from the power socket and don’t have a vent, all that energy must be dissipated into the room. That’s conservation of energy.

However, the term ‘air conditioner’, by definition, should provide cooling output, measured in BTUs. Zero Breeze, for example, has a rated 2,300 BTU of cooling output. Evaporative coolers, on the other hand, have 0 BTU of rated cooling output. As such there cannot be categorized as ventless air conditioners per se, but you’re right, they do provide a cool breeze based on the water evaporation principle.

Are evaporative coolers or AC-like ventless coolers not useful or effective in climates with higher humidity? Eg. North American East Coast climates vs. West Coast climates? In my research, I’m learning this may be the case, especially when trying to cool an interior room in an East Coast house. I already need to use a dehumidifier to control high humidity levels in my basement. We have a ductless AC unit in our hottest east-facing room to cool down our 2nd floor, and use air circulators to push the cool air to our west-facing master bedroom that does not have an AC unit. I’ve been looking for alternatives than having to add another ductless AC unit. Hence discovering evaporative coolers. But wondering if they are ineffective where I live.
As far as humidity is concerned, the basic difference between evaporative coolers and air conditioners is that evaporative coolers increase the humidity (like humidifiers) and air conditioners lower the humidity (like dehumidifiers). Now, it’s not the best idea to use an evaporative cooler in an already high humidity environment; the humidity will be further increased. But if you need a ventless solution, you can’t really use an air conditioner, and you’re basically forced to use an evaporative cooler; it will cool you down, but it will further increase the humidity. Humidity can then be lowered by a dehumidifier but, you’re right, this is not the most optimum solution, it’s just the only one available.
